Unity is a state of agreement between two or more people to become united or joined together as a whole. In unity, things are done the same way as agreed and anything that will go against the rules and regulations of agreement is done away with. One of the institutions where unity is expected is Marriage. This is because a good and healthy marriage is expected to be peaceful; unity brings peace. If there is absence of peace in a marriage, it means that unity is compromised. Unity or the quest for unity is not laid down for the sake of joke or feeling good, because in unity, those involved seek a goal or goals to be achieved by coming together. For example, in establishing a building, there will be need for bricks to be laid upon one another; and when this happens, it signifies a kind of unity, though inanimate. The sole purpose of the bricks being laid upon one another is so that a building can be formed, and that is the goal. But, assuming the bricks in a building are animated with life, and a brick below seeks to be on top, while refusing another one to be placed upon it, it can be said that unity has been compromised. External forces like windstorms, men with bulldozers etc. can also compromise the unity of the bricks in a building, and the result will be a crash and collapse. This explanation simply talks about unity and disunity, and this is why Jesus said, ‘‘and if a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand,’’ (Mark 3:25, NKJV). Same thing goes for a nation; if the citizens and especially those in power with different sectors of a country’s economy disagrees with one another, it is just a matter of time before the country becomes a failed state where anarchy will be the order of the day.
Psalm 133:1 says, ‘‘behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!’’ If we complete the reading of this Psalm, we would see that it shows an admonishment with the revelation of benefits to the people of God. Dwelling together in unity was likened to the oil spreading from the head of Aaron the High Priest in the days of Moses which means the spread of anointing to other parts of the body, and it was also likened to the dew upon Mount Hermon where the Lord commanded the blessing of life forever more.
Spiritually, there is power and blessing in unity, and this is one of the spiritual wisdom and knowledge that God wants us to have in Christ Jesus. The Lord wants the unity of faith in the midst of His people, (Ephesians 4:1-13). It is in the unity of faith that we Christians can experience peace, and tremendous power. It is in the unity of faith that we are protected from the onslaught of the enemy, and this can be confirmed when Balaam the Prophet was hired by Balak the King of Moab to curse the children of Israel as they journey, for Balaam saw the unity of Israel as they were encamped according to their tribes, and he had no choice than to bless them (Numbers 24:2, NKJV). So also, if we love one another as modern day saints of God just the way the Lord Jesus had commanded us in the unity of faith in His name, we will grow into the place God wants us to be and we will be protected from the enemy, (John 13:34-35).
